The Journey of the Sun

A School Play on Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Bihu & Pongal

10–15 Minutes School Assembly
Ready-to-use script for cultural programs.

Scene 1: The Sun and The Seasons

Soft music playing. Surya stands center stage with glowing light.
Narrator: Long ago, when humans lived close to nature, the Sun was more than light in the sky. He was Surya, the giver of life, warmth, and time itself.
Surya: For months, I travel south, and the world grows cold. But the time has come… I now begin my journey northward.
(Music rises)

Scene 2: Makar Sankranti – The Sacred Turn

Sage: Today, the Sun enters Makara Rashi. This holy day is called Makar Sankranti!
Narrator: It is believed that on this day, light defeats darkness, and good deeds bring great blessings.
(Villagers enter with folded hands)
Villagers: (Together) We thank you, Surya Dev!
Child: (Offering sweets) Take sesame and jaggery. Let our lives be sweet and our words kind.
Surya: Let harmony return to families. Let forgiveness heal old wounds.
(Short pause)
Narrator: On this day, Surya even visits his son Shani, teaching the world the power of reconciliation.

Scene 3: Uttarayan – Hopes Take Flight

Sound of wind. Children pretend to fly kites.
Narrator: With Makar Sankranti begins Uttarayan — the Sun’s northward journey.
Farmer 1: The days are getting longer!
Farmer 2: The cold is fading. Hope has returned!
Child: Look! Our kites touch the sky!
Narrator: Kites fly high, carrying dreams, gratitude, and joy — as people welcome health, warmth, and new beginnings.

Scene 4: Magh Bihu – Fire of Gratitude (Assam)

Bonfire prop or symbolic flame on stage.
Narrator: The Sun travels east to the fertile lands of Assam.
Assamese Farmer: Our harvest is complete. Let us thank fire and nature.
(Villagers circle the bonfire)
All: (Softly) May hardship burn away. May abundance stay.
Narrator: This is Magh Bihu — a celebration of harvest, unity, and sharing food with love.

Scene 5: Pongal – When Life Overflows (Tamil Nadu)

Clay pot prop. Boiling sound effect.
Tamil Farmer: Milk rises! Rice cooks!
All: (Joyfully) Pongalo Pongal!
Narrator: Pongal means to overflow — overflowing with prosperity, happiness, and blessings.
(Lord Krishna enters)
Krishna: Do not worship power alone. Honor the Earth, the cattle, and nature — for they sustain life.
Narrator: On Mattu Pongal, cows are thanked and celebrated, reminding us to respect every living being.

Final Scene: One Sun, One Message

(All characters come together on stage)
Surya: Though you celebrate me in many ways, your message is one.
All Together:

Gratitude to the Sun

Respect for Nature

Sharing with Humanity

Narrator: Makar Sankranti. Uttarayan. Bihu. Pongal. Different names. Different customs. But one eternal story — the journey of the Sun and the unity of India.
(Music swells)
