Absolute Purity: The Foundation of Chhath
During Chhath Puja, cleanliness (Nahay-Khay) goes beyond being a mere physical task; it represents a deep spiritual practice. The entire festival is founded on the principle of upholding a Sattvic (pure) state.
Rules of Purity
- Dietary Cleansing: Kitchens are thoroughly cleaned, and onions, garlic, along with non-vegetarian items, are completely prohibited. Prasad is prepared on a fresh clay stove to avoid any contamination from regular cooking.
- Physical Cleanliness: Vratis and their family members are required to bathe before handling any Puja items. Even a stray hair or a sneeze close to the Prasad necessitates restarting the entire preparation.
- Mental Purity: Physical cleanliness is intended to reflect mental purity. Followers must refrain from anger, ill will, dishonesty, or negative thoughts throughout the four days.
