The Environmental Impact of PoP Idols & Green Alternatives

Why PoP creates an immersion problem

Plaster of Paris is valued by idol makers because it is light, inexpensive, easy to mold, and dries quickly. Those same properties helped it replace heavier natural clay for large-scale production. But once immersed, PoP does not simply behave like river clay. It can remain as fragments or sludge, especially when many large idols enter the same water body.

The environmental burden grows when idols are coated with synthetic paints, varnish, plastic jewels, foil, and glitter.

Water quality and cleanup

Large immersion events can temporarily increase suspended solids and create significant physical debris. Organic offerings placed in plastic bags add another waste stream. Paint ingredients vary, so it is better to avoid making a universal claim about every painted idol; the safe approach is to prefer clearly non-toxic materials and reduce coatings.

Municipal cleanup removes visible waste, but prevention is more effective than recovering mixed material from water afterward.

Better idol choices

• Natural clay: choose locally sourced, water-dispersible clay with minimal paint.
• Small idols: smaller scale reduces material and makes home immersion easier.
• Reusable metal or stone murti: worship the same image annually and use a symbolic immersion ritual if it fits your tradition.
• Paper or other certified biodegradable forms: check binders, coatings, and dyes rather than trusting the label alone.

Community-scale solutions

Housing societies and mandals can provide artificial immersion tanks, separate flowers before immersion, prohibit plastic decor, publish approved material guidelines, and partner with local authorities for collection. A community policy is more effective when it is communicated before idols are purchased.

Artisans also need support. Eco-friendly transitions work best when communities place early orders, accept the color and texture of natural clay, and pay fairly for more labor-intensive craft.

Think in life cycles

The greenest decision is not always the item marketed as “eco.” Ask four questions: What is it made from? How far did it travel? What happens during use? Where will every part go afterward? Applying that life-cycle mindset to idols, lights, food service, flowers, and decor makes the whole festival more sustainable.
