For Rajasthan, where water scarcity can shape celebration choices, the symbolism does not require wasteful immersion. A small clay idol can be immersed at home in a container or handled according to local guidance. The spiritual point: releasing form while retaining devotion: remains intact.
A traditional clay idol begins as earth. Through the artisan’s work it receives recognizable form, is welcomed into the home or community, becomes the focus of worship, and is eventually returned. The cycle itself is the teaching.
The divine is not understood as trapped inside a temporary object. The form helps the mind relate, focus, love, and worship; the farewell reminds the devotee that sacred presence exceeds the form.
Impermanence is sometimes mistaken for sadness. In festival practice it can mean the opposite: because a moment will pass, participate in it fully. Cook the food, sing the aarti, visit family, make art, and then allow the season to move on.
Visarjan turns this insight into an embodied action rather than an abstract lecture.
Detachment in Indian philosophical language does not necessarily mean withdrawing from affection. It can mean acting with care without demanding permanent control over the outcome. The idol is loved precisely even though everyone knows the farewell is coming.
This is a useful model for modern life: work wholeheartedly, value relationships, and still recognize that change is unavoidable.
If an idol is made from natural clay and immersed responsibly, the material can return more closely to the ecological cycle from which it came. PoP, plastic, glitter, and persistent coatings interrupt that symbolism by leaving a residue that does not easily reintegrate.
Sustainability is therefore not only a civic concern; it can reinforce the philosophical logic of the ritual.
The farewell cry contains both release and return: go now, come again next year. It acknowledges separation without treating it as final. The festival closes by pointing toward renewal: a new cycle, a new household moment, and another opportunity to begin wisely.
